Everyday Winners: Tom Deacon on being the best at your craft
What does it take to perform at the top of your game and under pressure? We asked ROKOR Ambassador, Tom Deacon.
Stand-up comedian, radio DJ, host and TV presenter for the likes of BBC, Radio 1, Sky F1 and the Champions League to name only a few.
Tom has not only had to deal with the pressure of live TV in the moment, but has been surrounded by athletes and personalities at the very top of their game.
What are the main characteristics and personalities you see in people at the top of their game?
What I’ve noticed more than anything is that the talent they have isn’t all they relay on whatever it may be. Working smart to enhance it is key. They also have a drive and clear vision for what they want which helps them work towards that goal. Also surrounding themselves with people who have similar qualities or understand theirs is essential.
How do you stay composed in high pressure environments when presenting live?
There are many moments which require me to be ‘on’ and hyper focused, especially during live filming, where you don’t get a second chance to make a mistake. I stay composed by acknowledging to myself, you’ve done this plenty of times before, so you have nothing to fear! Being prepared is always key to take the pressure off my mind with the what ifs. I also smile and try to enjoy what I’m doing, that also dims the level of anxiety.
Where do you see the future of sports entertainment?
From someone who presents at real life F1 and F1 Esports I’d say I see more and more of the link between the viewer and the action, whilst being on their phone. That access to stats and more information is something that fans want more and more.
Thank you Tom for chatting with us and look forward to seeing you on the box very soon.
